Event Sports Massage
Sports massage is the use of techniques to enhance athletic performance.
SPORTS MASSAGE AND DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE ARE NOT SYNONYMOYS.
Pre-Event
Done between six hours before the event and the start. Enhances muscular tone and flexibility and helps the athlete achieve optimal physical and psychological readiness. Sessions are no longer than 20 minutes and are generally less that 15. The tempo is fast paced and upbeat to avoid relaxation.
Inter-Event
Done when an athlete is competing several times over one-two days or continuously over several days. The intent is to address the athlete’s needs to maintain optimal physical and psychological readiness.
Post-Event
Done up to six hours after the event. Creates a prolonged state of decreased muscular tension and facilitates physical and psychological recovery.
Training/Conditioning Massage
Also known as “maintenance massage.” This utilizes deeper massage techniques for athletes as a regular part of their training routine. The purpose of this advanced specialty is to help athletes attain and maintain their optimal physical training condition. Requires specific knowledge of the athlete’s needs based on the sport.
Restoration/Rehabilitation Massage
Also known as “remedial massage.” This is a results-oriented technique that aids athletes with injuries or disability conditions they may encounter between events. This advanced technique helps restore the athlete to their previous level of physical and psychological fitness.
